Five Crafty Ways to Re-Purpose Old Sweaters

The Maids • Nov 07, 2014

We all have old sweaters that we can't seem to let go. Instead of allowing them to take up much needed space in the closet, why not re-purpose these sweaters into other items so you can avoid throwing them? Here are five crafty and creative ways to do just that:

Craft a New Cardigan from an Old Sweater

If you have a sweater that no longer fits, turn it into a flattering cardigan with a pair of scissors, thread and buttons. Cut the sweater down the middle, sewing the seams for a more finished look. Next, sew in the buttons to give it a real cardigan feel. You can even sew in eyelets so you can close it up when it gets extra cold.

Remake into Colorful Pillows

Sweaters, especially thick and fluffy ones, make great pillow covers. Cut an old sweater so that you get one large piece, measure it according to the size of your pillow and start sewing the sides. You can also sew in a zipper along one side to make thecover easy to remove.

Create a Comfy Throw

Grab a few old sweaters, cut them up into squares, and sew them together to make a big throw. These fluffy throws are great for cuddling in the winter, and for making your sofa extra comfortable.

Snug and Comfy Dog Sweater

Sweaters are often stretchy and perfect for creating snug doggie wraps for the winter. Cut the arm of an old sweater, cut holes for the legs and arms and you get the perfect winter outfit for your little pooch. Make sure to sew the edges to make sure that your dog doesn't unravel the yarn

Turn an Old Sweater into Cool Mittens

This is an easy project that you can do with your kids. Use tracing paper to determine the size of your hands and trace this onto the sweater in two layers. Cut and sew the two layers together to create your mittens! Decorate with buttons, ribbons and even paint if you like.
