Quick, Easy Cleaning Tips You Might Not Have Thought Of

The Maids • Jun 27, 2013

The truth is that cleaning is not a lot of fun, so anything you can do to make it go more quickly is great. These tips will help you keep your house cleaner and tidier all the time—you might even impress your maid service!

What tips do you use to make cleaning go faster?

Tip #1: Handling Bad Carpet Odors: If your carpet is well overdue for a thorough cleaning, this will help you get your carpet clean and smelling much, much better.

  • If you have a carpet cleaner on hand, use a combination of vinegar and water to “shampoo” the carpet.
  • After you finish cleaning or between deep cleanings, sprinkle baking soda over the carpet.
  • Let it sit until completely dry.
  • Vacuum the floor as you usually would.

The vinegar and water cleans the carpet fibers and even disinfects. The baking soda absorbs odors which you then carry away in the vacuum, leaving your carpet cleaner.

If you want to, you can mix essential oils into the baking soda before you use it, and it will leave a scent behind when you finish vacuuming!

Tip #2: Preventing Messy Plants: You want your houseplants to drain well, but it can be annoying to water your plants and see dirt washing out with the water.

The next time you pot a plant, put a coffee filter in the bottom of the pot. It will allow the water to filter through while containing the dirt. Who knew such a simple solution was sitting right in your kitchen already?

Tip #3: No More Fish Smell: Love cooking fish but hate the fishy smell that fills your kitchen for a day afterward? That won’t be a problem anymore with this trick: fill a bowl with vinegar and keep it on the counter while you cook and eat the fish.

The vinegar neutralizes the fish smell in the air, and when you’re finished, you can just dump it down the drain!
