How to Clean Your Iron

The Maids • Nov 14, 2014

Your iron is a necessary tool that helps to keep clothing nice and wrinkle-free. It’s very easy to think of an iron as an effective cleaning tool, and forget that it also needs to be cleaned regularly. The following are some easy steps that will help you with the cleaning process:

Step 1: Unplug the Iron

The first thing you should do is to unplug the iron and make sure it is completely cool before cleaning.

Step 2: Mix a Solution for Cleaning the Appliance

Mix up some dishwashing soap in a bowl of water to use to clean the iron.

Step 3: Rub the Soleplate

The soleplate is the metal part located at the bottom of the iron. Rub it with the towel soaked in cleaning solution to remove any residue. Once you’re through, make sure you wipe it clean with a new damp towel. For more stubborn stains, purchase a hot-iron cleaner. This product is readily available at most local hardware stores. Just make sure you follow the instructions.

Step 4: Clean the Steam Holes

You can use a pipe cleaner or cotton swab dipped into a cleaning solution to remove trapped residue in the steam holes.

Step 5: Run the Iron

Plug in your iron and set it to steam clean. Once you have done this, let it run for one or two minutes. If you iron isn't equipped with a steam clean feature, turn up the steam and heat setting.

Step 7: Allow the Steam to Run

As you let the steam run, make sure you stand clear of the iron and allow the steam to pass though it for several minutes or until the water is completely gone.

Step 8: Unplug the Iron

Once you’re through with the cleaning process, make sure you turn off the iron. Unplug it from the wall socket and allow it to cool.
