Quick, Easy, Inexpensive Ways to Decorate Your Home

The Maids • Jan 31, 2013

If you’re not the type to spend hours in the furniture store or you’re just watching a tight budget, there are a few things you can do right now to make your house more organized and designed that will cost you very little money and only a little bit of time!

Multi-task Where You Can

There are some amazing pieces of furniture that serve double-duty. That ottoman with the lift off cover? Great storage place for shoes, magazines, or DVDS. Turn a chest or trunk sitting in your closet into a bench or coffee table that also holds all of your extra blankets or out-of-season sweaters.

In the picture to the left from HGTV, the designers turned two twin mattresses into couches that also serve as a comfortable place for guests to sleep (just remember to change the sheets!).

Make Use of What You Already Have

From storage containers like baskets and bins to accessories like vases and tablecloths, use what you have! That white tablecloth you usually only pull out for holidays plus a vase from your wedding and a few flowers from the yard can make a beautiful dining room table with minimal work.

Baskets and bins are especially helpful as you get organized in your house. If you have the time and desire, you can even line baskets with fabric or bins with decorative paper.

Don’t Ignore the Walls or Ceiling

From framing photographs to hang onto the wall to painting the ceiling, these surfaces exist throughout your house just waiting to be decorated. Fill the blank spaces with things you find beautiful and well-suited to the space.

If you’re an extremely crafty person, one extra tip is to make or sew your own design elements. There are ideas out there for creating everything from curtains and tablecloths to children’s tables and toys.
