Revive Your Outdoor Patio Furniture

The Maids • May 30, 2014

While focusing on indoor house cleaning duties, the outdoor areas tend to get forgotten about or neglected, especially if there is a lot to do inside. Regardless, the outdoor areas need attention too! The furniture says a lot about your home so you want it looking clean and alive! Here are some helpful hints to get your patio looking great gain.

The Effects of Weather

The furniture on your porch still gets exposure to the weather. A hard rain with good wind speed can angle the rain onto the furniture. The hot summer temperatures can melt or soften materials to reshape them if left unattended. The cold winter temperatures can freeze furniture and cause it to crack or become brittle. The cold can also pile up snow on the furniture and possibly damage the surfaces. The fall brings leaves that can land on the furniture and create algae or ugly stains. Wood materials can suffer from any of these issues. There is so much that outdoor products endure.

Cleaning the Surfaces

There are hundreds of household chemicals and outdoor furniture cleaners on the market that can clean patio products. Some are multi-purpose for anything, while others work on metal, plastic, vinyl, stainless steel, brass, bronze, or a combination of these materials. Wood materials have special cleaners and protectants. The most common products sitting on porches and patios include plastic or vinyl furniture. This is mainly due to their affordable, yet disposable prices. There are several plastic and/or vinyl surface cleaners that work, but you will also find items labeled as plastic and vinyl patio furniture cleaner.

If the vinyl patio furniture cleaner does not do the trick, you can try other cleaners such as bleach, magic erasers, stain guard solutions, etc. You can also try different tools to clean it such as soft wire brushes, toothbrushes, scrubbing sponges, etc.

If none of the above methods work, you can simply repaint it! Paint is available for vinyl and plastic surfaces at your local paint supplier store. Some are specifically designed for items like patio furniture, but most are labeled as a material paint in general to sell more. Regardless of the description, a plastic or vinyl surface paint will work great as long as you follow the directions on the container. However, look at the adhesion properties to see how good it will stick! Choose your gloss and prep the furniture. Then you can begin painting your way to a new furniture set.

Upon completing the task, you will discover your brand new looking patio set that was completed with such a small amount of money. Enjoy a job well done and impress your friends and family. Above all, enjoy spending time on your porch again!
