The Purpose of Your Closet: Organization Tips

Written by
You probably have a lot of closets in your house, and chances are at least one of them frequently misses the house cleaning circuit. There’s no need to hide that closet anymore—jump right in and get it done by defining its purpose!

Just like maid service teams come with specific tasks to keep them focused, giving your closet a “task” or purpose will help keep you focused and keep it organized for a long time.

Step-by-Step

1. Take everything out. It’s going to mean getting into corners, onto shelves, and into battles with unwieldy items, but stick with it. Get everything pulled out until the closet is completely empty.

2. Decide the purpose of the particular closet. Is it a closet bathroom you will use to hold linens and extra soaps? Is it a bedroom closet for your clothes? Shared with a spouse? Is it a kids’ closet for toys or a hall closet for coats? Whatever you may want to use it for, give it a particular purpose so it doesn’t become a catch-all.

3. Sort through the items. Throw things away that are looking worn or unusable. Things that are still in good shape but you don’t need anymore, throw into a box or bag for donation. Once that’s done, make two piles: one for the items that fit the closet’s purpose, and one for items that don’t.

4. Put things back into the closet, but only those things that fit according to the decided purpose. Take a few minutes to hang up any clothes or coats and find containers for toys or small items.

5. Don’t forget the other pile! When you’re done, make sure you find new homes for your displaced things. When it’s all done, take a minute to check out your freshly cleaned closet!
